In general, it's best to stick to a routine, because sudden changes can be very alarming for children. They can feel lost and become anxious that no one will pick them up.
Drop-offs:
- Make time in your schedule to help your child settle in if he or she needs it.
- Use an activity reference to help them understand the new timing. For example: "Mommy will come to get you at nap time today."
- When saying goodbye at the beginning of the day, do not hang around for longer than necessary.
- Be firm when you are going to leave. Often children will start to cry but sticking around will be harder for both of you.
Pick-ups:
- If you know you’re going to be late, call your centre in advance to let the child know.
- Ask your ECE if they can have your child start to get ready and use the washroom prior to their pickup time.
